Joey 101
Affordable Rent and Flexible Work for University Students
Wait, what’s a Joey?
Joeys are live-in employees who earn wages by helping Hosts and pay rent for a room in the Host’s home. This is an opportunity for you to secure affordable rent and flexible employment that builds your resume while enriching your sense of nearby community.
Why be a Joey?
As a student, maybe you need a safe and quiet place to work and study that extends before or after typical on-campus offerings. Maybe dorm living doesn’t work for you, and off-campus housing is hard to find or too expensive. Maybe you want to make some money to support your daily needs, but a typical job is inflexible around your busy class and study schedules.
As a Joey, you make cost-effective assistance available to Hosts who want to enjoy their best years at home. It is a partnership that fosters community and support on all sides. Ultimately, for Joeys, by bolstering your support system and reducing the financial constraints during your study years, we know you will have more room to succeed in whatever comes after school.
How does it work?
As a “Joey,” you technically have two roles with your Host:
An employee, paid by your Host for the hours you work on tasks to support them and their household
A tenant who pays the Host rent each month.
Our Hosts receive cost-effective assistance while enjoying the comfort of their own homes, maintaining their independence, and gaining a reliable companion (you!) for peace of mind. Maybe your Host needs help making dinner and tidying the kitchen afterward or extra hands to change a lightbulb in their bedroom — these are probably hours you’d spend at the house anyway, so why not get paid for them?
